Fast Creosote In-situ Remediation

Fast Creosote
In-situ Remediation

EKOGRID in-situ technology amplifies the remediation power of nature and has already proven to be an ecological, sustainable, and cost-efficient way of cleaning and remediating the environment in ten countries across five continents. In the case of Canada, the goal of the test was to verify the remediation effect of creosotes, and EKOGRID™ was proven to be a very fast creosote remediation method.

Bench tests and smaller pilots are very important when developing new and better applications for EKOGRID™. A bench test to verify the remediation effect of EKOGRID™ in a separate research setup for creosote – a substance containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and usually also some aliphatic hydrocarbons – was carried out as part of a larger project with our partner Signum Consulting Ltd in Alberta, Canada.

Verifying the in-situ remediation effect of creosotes

Tests were performed in boxes containing a few tons of soil and a controlled amount of targeted compounds. Soil polluted with creosote was placed in a 4×4-meter wooden box and electrodes were installed on both ends of the container. One EKOGRID™ control unit was used to manage the remediation process.

The goal of the test was to verify the remediation effect of creosotes, which are a category of carbonaceous chemicals formed by the distillation of various tars and by pyrolysis of plant-derived material, such as wood or fossil fuel. They are widespread due to historically wide usage in various industries and are a major contaminant of soil, groundwater, and sediments.

Excellent in-situ remediation results

EKOGRID™ was proven to be a very fast creosote remediation method.

The results were monitored using measurements of soil samples for less than a year. The results were excellent. BTEX compounds decomposed in less than a month, PCP in nine months, and PAHs and aliphatic hydrocarbons in less than one year. In the aggregate, the decomposition rate was about 1500 mg of organic contaminant per kg per month.
